Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle 1996

  • The Jaboulet company was founded by Antoine Jaboulet in 1843; his twin sons, Paul and Henri, continued to build the family business
  • The elder son ("aîné" in French), Paul, established the company in its present form and gave it his own name; since then, the company has been run by successive generations of sons from that side of the Jaboulet family
  • The reputation of Jaboulet wines comes from the quality of the well situated and tended vineyards, low yields, careful vinification, and diligent aging in oak casks
  • The pearl of the estate is their Hermitage "La Chapelle" - "is one of the great red wines of the world" as stated by Clive Coates
  • The vines from "La Chapelle" is 40-60 years old (with very low yield of merely 10 to 18 hl/ha) - you just can't miss this wine!

Wine Spectator: 94
"Much more expressive on the nose than the '97--and darker and thicker--adding to the evidence that '96 is a better vintage in the northern Rhône. Delivers a round, clean, pure mouthfeel of vibrant, focused red berry and blackberry flavors. Superb balance, as it walks a tightrope among the relatively high acidity, ripe tannins and delicious fruit. Worth cellaring." (Dec 1999)
