Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 1986 (half bottle)

CT:90

  • Beaucastel is perhaps the most famous, largest (>200 hectares) and one of the oldest estates in Chateauneuf du Pape dating all the way back to 1549. Beaucastel was one of the very first domaines to practise organic viticulture. Unusually, all 13 permitted grape varieties are grown although it is Mourvèdre which is Beaucastel’s signature grape, often making up a third of the final blend.

CellarTracker: 90
"Dinner with the Perrin family, very gracious and generous hosts in CdP. Great experience to drink this with the vintner, opened this as our last wine of the evening. Still has a nice core crimson/brick color. Nose a little reticent at first, but opened nicely after about 20 minutes. No brett/barnyard. Dusted dark fruits, mushroom, blueberry, black tea - classic Beaucastel nose. Palate of dried cherry, cranberry, blue fruits, meat/savory, spice and tobacco. Some smoke and herbs on back palate. Tannins soft and resolved. This was a beautifully aged bottle; elegant and smooth. Still has many of the signature CdP flavors but is definitely in a tertiary phase...time to drink. Great stuff..."
