This week, we have selected three great value "Super Tuscan" - all highly rated but only at a fraction of the price of the Super Super ones...
Avignonesi Capanelle 50&50 1999 - this is quickly becoming a legendary Super Tuscan, essentially the "Opus One" of Tuscany - a historic collaboration between two esteemed producers (Avignonesi from Montepulciano and Capannelle from Gaiole in Chianti). 50&50 brings forth all the silky elegance of the Merlot and the distinct, rustic charm of the Sangiovese.
Le Pupille Saffredi 2000 - "Saffredi" is the top of the line of Le Pupille, which is located in the south of the Tuscan Maremma. The typical blend is a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Alicante (local version of Grenache). The quality of the wine improved noticeably when Christian Le Sommer, former winemaker of Chateau Latour, took over winemaking with the 2000 vintage.
Sette Ponti Oreno 2003 - a world-class Super-Tuscan estate with first release of "Oreno" in 2000. By the estate's fourth vintage, Sette Ponti Oreno 2003 already won the 5th place in the Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines for 2005. A blend of 35% Sangiovese, 35% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is truly breathtaking and mind-blowing.
