Solengo Argiano 1998

WS:92 RP:91

  • The hills of Montalcino are overflowing with Sangiovese, and it is in that region that the most noble and delicate Brunello di Montalcino is made. So why, in an area so suited to Sangiovese, would someone ever want to plant any other varietal? Answer is: To make Argiano Solengo. A cuvee containing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, Argiano Solengo is produced by the same winemaker responsible for Sassicaia and Solaia. This high-profile blend has evident Mediterranean characteristics and a sunny nature but with grace and delicacy.

Wine Spectator: 92
"Violet and berry aromas, with hints of toasted oak. Medium- to full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, fruity finish." (Oct 2000)

Robert Parker: 91
"The 1998 Solengo is a terrific offering. An intriguing blend aged in 100% new French oak for 16 months prior to bottling, it boasts an opaque ruby/purple color, as well as a classic black currant and blackberry-scented bouquet infused with high quality, toasty oak, and elements of roasted espresso. Intense, medium to full-bodied, chewy, and rich, with a multilayered mid-palate and sweet tannin... Impressive!" (Aug 2000)
