"Deep ruby-red. Quintessential Cote-Rotie aromas of minerals, black licorice, game, mocha, lead pencil, woodsmoke and brown spices. Fat, lush and seamless; much more refined than the old-vines Cornas that preceded it. Dark berry flavors complicated and softened by woodsmoke and exotic spices. A compelling Cote-Rotie with great seve and finesse. Suave, mounting finish features smooth tannins and a lingering woodsmoke perfume. New World syrahs with three degrees more alcohol rarely show half as much flavor interest as this wine. This will make a worthy successor to the otherworldly 1999 Cote-Rotie Vieilles Vignes, which I rated 97(+?) when I retasted it earlier this fall." (Feb 2003)
